The exhibition addresses reflections on the past and present of the architecture created through the politics of global non-alignment on the African continent. The trip to Lagos and the encounters with the architecture of the International Trade Fair in Lagos aim to re-evaluate and activate the processes associated with these spaces today. In a direct experience, the authors seek to establish spatial and temporal reflections and to create their own relationship, both personal and generational, with this architecture.

Between the Giardini, Arsenale and the historic town, it’s easy to throw away time at this year’s vast Architecture Biennale. To help you out, here’s our guide with all the must-sees. There are 64 national participants in this year’s Architecture Biennale 2023, which is accompanied by curator Lesley Lokko’s The Laboratory of the Future exhibition (read here the interview with editorial director Walter Mariotti). The pavilions are distributed between the Giardini (27) and the Arsenale (22), with a number also outside the Biennale’s institutional exhibition areas and scattered throughout the center of Venice (14). It’s a big number, especially when you consider that each one has its own history, its own background that must often be studied by devoting time to it, so as not to make the visit a pointless exercise in presence. Iva Njunjić and Tihomir Dičić will represent Serbia at the 18th International Venice Architecture Biennale with In Reflections…, an exhibition that uses the 1977 International Trade Fair in Lagos, Nigeria, a product of non-aligned cooperation between Yugoslavia and Nigeria, as a lens through which to explore futures, presents, and pasts of architecture.

The Non-Aligned Movement, founded in 1961 was a specific international organization whose core politics were embodied in anti-colonialism, anti-imperialism, self-determination, and coexistence among states. The politics of non-alignment influenced societies of the young independent states of the African continent in the 1960s and 1970s, with many cities across the continent undergoing the process of transformation. Yugoslavia, as one of the leaders of this Movement, fostered active cooperation among member states, which was realized through numerous construction projects related to the modernization—industrialization and urbanization of young multinational countries in Africa, with many Yugoslav architects and engineers playing a notable role in shaping the projects on the ground. Among those operating in the non-aligned countries of the Global South, the Belgrade company Energoprojekt stood out. In more than forty countries across Africa, Asia and South America, numerous architects from this enterprise conceived buildings as reflections of the future, which upon being built became symbols of modernization and independence of these countries. Many of such projects congress centers, hotels, airports, and international fairs were conceived to be nods in the international infrastructure, aimed to connect African cities to the global map after a period of colonization as protagonists.

The National Pavilion of Serbia, curated by Iva Njunjić and Tihomir Dičić, has just announced its exhibition at the 2023 Venice Biennale, which explores architecture’s futures, presents, and pasts through the lens of an international Trade Fair in Lagos, Nigeria, in 1977. The trade fair was a product of non-aligned cooperation between Yugoslavia and Nigeria. In 1961, an international organization named the Non-Aligned Movement valued anti-colonialism, anti-imperialism, self-determination, and peaceful cohabitation. As one of the Movement’s forerunners, Yugoslavia encouraged member states to work actively together. This was made possible by several construction projects aimed at the modernization, industrialization, and urbanization of developing African nations, with many Yugoslav architects and engineers significantly contributing to the projects’ actual design. Rad “U refleksijama…“ autorskog tima Iva Njunjić i Tihomir Dičić, predstavlja Srbiju na predstojećoj 18. Medjunarodnoj izložbi arhitekture u Veneciji, pod nazivom Laboratorija budućnosti, koja počinje 20. maja, a traje do 26. novembra.

Okosnicu rada predstavlja projekat iz sedamdesetih godina prošlog veka jugoslovenskog arhitekte Zorana Bojovića, Sajam u Lagosu. Pola veka kasnije, Iva i Tihomir su u februaru ove godine posetili ovaj arhitektonski kompleks. Osnovna ideja je bila da se upoznaju sa dinamičnim promenama koje je ovaj kompleks doživeo.

Sa saradnicima iz Lagosa prikupili su materijal za venecijansko bijenale. Podršku u njihovom istraživačkom radu pružili su profesor dr Mokolade Džonson i njegovi studenti sa Departmana za Arhitekturu Univerziteta u Lagosu (UNILAG). Upoznali su se i razgovarali sa nigerijskim arhitektama koji su predstavnici Afrike, Nigerije i Lagosa u reprezentativnim udruženjima.

Predstavnici  Srbije na velikoj arhitektonskoj smotri otkrivaju nam šta će to zainteresovati publiku u venecijanskom Đardiniju.

Ovogodišnje, osamnaesto po redu Bijenale arhitekture u Veneciji održaće se od subote 20. maja do nedelje 26. novembra, a našu zemlju na ovoj prestižnoj manifestaciji predstavljaće rad „U refleksijama…“ autorskog tima koji čine master inženjeri arhitekture Iva Njunjić (1994) i Tihomir Dičić (1993).

Da podsetimo, njihov rad izabran je početkom januara na konkursu koji su raspisali Ministarstvo kulture i informisanja Republike Srbije i Muzej primenjene umetnosti, kao realizator nastupa, u saradnji sa Udruženjem arhitekata Srbije, a zadata tema kuratorke Bijenala bila je „Laboratorija budućnosti„.

Pre polaska za Veneciju, želeli smo da sa našim predstavnicima malo dublje zađemo u koncept same izložbe, koja u fokusu ima ulogu naših arhitekata u procesu transformacije afričkih gradova pod okriljem Pokreta nesvrstanosti, a na primeru kompleksa Međunarodnog sajma u Lagosu arhitekte Zorana Bojovića.

VENECIJA – Na 18. Međunarodnoj izložbi arhitekture u Veneciji, koji će trajati od 20. maja do 26. novembra, Srbiju će predstavljati rad „U refleksijama” autorskog tima Ive Njunjić i Tihomira Dičića.

Okosnicu srpske izložbe na venecijanskom bijenalu čini objekat Međunarodnog sajma u Lagosu, projekat koji je osmislio i vodio arhitekta Zoran Bojović, a građen je od 1974. do 1976. godine, stoji u saopštenju.

Kako je navedeno, Njunjić i Dičić su posetili Nigeriju u februaru, a „njihovi susreti sa arhitekturom Sajma, imaju za cilj sagledavanje i aktiviranje procesa vezanih za ove prostore danas”.

Autori nastoje da „ustanove prostorne i vremenske refleksije i kao rezultat predstave jednu arhitektonsku identitetsku celinu”, koja bi trebalo da „afirmiše hitnost i potencijal sadašnjeg trenutka, u kontekstu izazova budućnosti u kojima se ova arhitektura može prepoznati kao resurs”.

Projekat naših arhitekata usmerava pažnju na arhitekturu kreiranu kroz međunarodnu saradnju, posmatrajući je kao potencijal i resurs za budućnost.

Na 18. Međunarodnoj izložbi arhitekture u Veneciji Republiku Srbiju predstavljaće rad „U refleksijama…“ autorskog tima koji čine Iva Njunjić i Tihomir Dičić. Okosnicu izložbe, čiji je konkursni naziv bio „Pridruživanje svetskoj mapi – Učenje o arhitekturi Pokreta nesvrstanih”, čini Međunarodni sajam u nigerijskom gradu Lagosu, projekat koji je osmislio i vodio arhitekta Zoran Bojović.

Cilj konkursa koji su raspisali Ministarstvo kulture i informisanja Republike Srbije i Muzej primenjene umetnosti, kao realizator nastupa, u saradnji sa Udruženjem arhitekata Srbije, bio je izbor projekta koji će odgovoriti na temu Bijenala – „Laboratorija budućnosti”  Lesli Loko, kuratorke 18. Bijenala arhitekture u Veneciji koje se otvara se 20. maja i traje do 26. novembra 2023. godine.
